Houria Cafe Closing

We are permanently closing the Houria cafe doors on 31st July, but will continue to cater for events in the community centre and around Bristol (and the UK). Our partnership with Eastside Community Trust is not ending, just changing.

For the last 18 months we have had the honour and the privilege of working alongside our gorgeous partners at Eastside Community Trust in delivering the cafe and it’s been an incredible ride. Our massive joint effort to upgrade the kitchen and space, enhancing the friendly and caring hub of Easton Community Centre into a tasty and vibrant eatery, has been graciously received by the communities that visit. We all feel that love will linger on after the cafe closes.

We have relished in whipping up the spicy vibes with our food and music, and will miss the daily shenanigans with our regulars, their children and pets. There’s never a dull moment in our little corner of Easton and we still encourage you to come and book the community centre for your events and have us cater for you.

We took the task of providing a community service seriously and since opening we have served authentic, diverse hand-cooked food to locals and visitors from further afield who have been attracted through our BBC feature last summer on Rick Stein’s Food Stories programme. It’s also been beautiful to be able to feed people for free when they have needed it through our unofficial free food scheme, particularly those of us currently without a home. Our work for Food Justice won’t stop here, as we will continue to run our free Feast Events in the future.

For now though, we are taking a break from the daily operations of running a cafe and are making space for some new adventures. We are a Womanist organisation and taking a spell of rest and rejuvenation is natural and necessary.

“Rest is not a luxury, a privilege, or a bonus we must wait for once we are burned out” - Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance

With heartfelt thanks,

Kim Prado, Founder Houria
